In recent years there has been a very rapid development of physiotherapy, osteopathy and horse chiropractics. Many specialists appeared in these areas, while there were no descriptions of specific exercise sets, as well as recommendations on how to restore horse performance after previous injuries. The book Jec Aristotle Ballou fills this gap. The author proposes 55 exercises to be done from the ground or from saddles, so simple that any horse owner can use them. It presents ready-made training sets for horses working on recovery after injuries or after a long period of training, as well as recommendations for horses of various ages, older and young, prepared for work under saddle.
Why horses Need Correction Exercises
Good riding focuses primarily on improving the horse's fitness and performance and on his generally understood goodness. Ale even proper training, based on the principles of classical dressage, is often unable to fully eradicate bad movement patterns and habits, which many horses do not allow optimal movement and to maintain the cleanliness of individual walks. In the event of loss of balance, the body is defended by compensation. They may take the form of muscle spasm, reduced joint mobility or signals sent to and from the central nervous system with a need for another way of moving. Once the compensation patterns have been created, it is not enough for a horse to stop working periodically. Tissue adhesions and permanent muscle spasms do not disappear spontaneously, even if we eliminate their cause. In order for the body to get rid of them, it is necessary to intervene in the form of manual therapy, as well as to change signals in the horse's body.
Chiropractic treatments or massages help solve the problem of reduced mobility, allowing the horse to optimally move. Ale is only the first step – this type of procedure will not create a proper motor pattern. For this purpose, the horse should perform a lot of exercises that will teach him how to move properly. The motion controls the nervous system, storing abnormal signals until they are reprogrammed. Jec Ballou describes exercises whose task is to reprogram the nervous system and change the horse's motor patterns.
From the book you will learn:
• how to improve the quality of the legs and coordination of the horse,
• how to restore a horse to form after injury or longer break from work,
• how to get rid of the weaknesses that won't let the horse follow your orders,
• how to improve the quality of rigid, uncoordinated treads or shorten the step,
• how to reduce stiffening in the horse's body,
• how to move the horse's body weight more to the ass,
• what to do in case of patella loss, unstable pelvis or strong motion preference in one
page,
• how to check if the resistance, which horse puts during work, is due to its physical limitations, or
behavioral problems,
• why the horse is not making enough progress,
• why the horse needs regular chiropractic treatments.
This is a very practical compendium of exercises for horses that require rehabilitation, improvement of fitness and performance or variety of daily training.
Colorful photographs, drawings and diagrams, as well as clues for riders and trainers help to understand the appropriateness of applying specific exercises, suitable for the horse's mobility problem from the point of view of his biomechanics and muscle system.
Each rider or trainer can easily choose the right exercise, depending on the health problems and other needs of the horse. I also recommend this book to physiotherapists and massagers of horses, for whom it will be an excellent help in developing training recommendations for horses in sports, recreational or rehabilitation training.
