Selenium is an extremely common deficiency in horses. It is especially common in the northern part of Poland.
This element is built into proteins called selenoproteins, which play an important role in the immune and antioxidant function.
It is essential for the proper functioning of thyroid and muscle, which protects against myopathy. It is also crucial for breeding functions of stallions and mares.
The absorption of selenium is much more effective in combination with vitamin E, as shown in many in vivo studies.
This element is closely linked to sulphuric amino acids. It also correlates with copper and protein.
In view of the interaction of all components of the diet, it is important not only to maintain an adequate amount of them in the daily dose, but also to maintain a mutual proportion.
We call it proper balance of diets.
When to use?
- if you have found a shortage of selenium in your blood
- as a component for balancing a full dose of food
- in the case of selenium deficiency detected in the hair or hoove test
- in horses with fertility problems
- in horses having difficulty developing muscle mass
- in horses in intensive training
- with reduced immunity
- with established lymphopenia
The role of selenium in the body:
- regulates the production of red blood cells and protects them from free radicals
- has a major effect on fertility, mare reproductive cycle and semen quality in stallions
- is part of glutathione peroxidase belonging to the enzyme group that regulates the rate of oxidation in cells and protects cell membranes
before damage by free radicals
- determines the metabolism of thyroid hormones
- participates in the immune functions of the body, stimulating the production of white blood cells that are actively involved in the destruction of attacking viruses.
Especially sensitive to the deficiency of selenium are T cells, which in the organ are responsible for destroying cells unable to perform their function properly.
as a result of virus infection, mutations, damage to external factors (chemical, physical), effects of bacterial toxins.
Symptoms and effects of deficiency:
- anaemia, poor red blood cell parameters
- decreased peroxidase levels, resulting in increased levels of reactive oxygen forms in the body
- lack of energy, weakness, apathy
- muscle pain, stiffness, musculoskeletal
- weak immunity
- decreased fertility, difficulty in maintaining pregnancy
- foals decrease in weight gain, slowdown in development and food muscle dystrophy, called white muscle disease
